After much delay in kicking off the 2020-2021 winter sports season, the Hornet wrestlers got their program’s 3rd season underway in a Straits Area Conference matchup at St Ignace. Pellston was scheduled to face off against both St Ignace and Rudyard.
Pellston vs St Ignace
The meet started at the 160 lb weight class with Pellston’s lone senior Zander Overholt vs Colin Kinsorski of the Saints. Zander would go on to win the match by securing a major decision victory with a score of 12-1 to put the Hornets up 4-0.
Sophomore Corbin Overholt then faced Austin Roughton in the 171 lb weight class. Roughton would secure the victory for the Saints scoring a pin with a fall time of 3:13 to give the Saints the advantage 4-6.
At 189 lbs sophomore Will Kline would pin Jeffery Chinwa with a fall time of 1:04 to put the Hornets back on top 10-6.
The match at the 215 lb weight class would see the Saints go back on top with Paul Roughton scoring a pin over sophomore Aston VanHuysen with a fall time of 1:53 to bring the team score to 10-12.
Fellow Pellston sophomore Aiden Klungle would then pick up a forfeit at 285 lbs to put the Hornets back on top 16-12
The Hornets and Saints would continue to trade forfeits with Wisteria Brady for the Saints at 103 lbs and Pellston sophomore Waasmowin Craven at 112 lbs bringing the team score to 22-18.
At 119 lbs, in a battle of the Matts on the mat, Pellston junior Matt Chiles would pin Matt Valletta with a fall time of 4:41 to increase the Hornet lead to 28-18.
Jonathan Litzner would pick up a forfeit victory for the Saints at 125 lbs to bring the score to 28-24.
After a double forfeit at 130 lbs, Hornet freshman Kenny Crawford would pin Jax Litzner with a fall time of 1:36 in the 135 lb weight class to bring the team score to 34-24.
Both teams would forfeit at 140 lbs while Hunter Sonnenberg (9th) and Nate Chiles (11th) would pick up forfeit victories at 145 lbs and 152 lbs to bring the final meet score to 46-24 in favor of the Hornets.
Pellston vs Rudyard
Only three matches would take place against the Bulldogs. The meet began with a pair of forfeits for the Hornets as Will Kline (189) and Aston VanHuysen (215) secured wins to put the Hornets up 12-0.
The first match of the meet came at 285 lbs after what was a close match up to that point Marlon Staten would pin Aiden Klungle with a fall time of 3:54 to put the Bulldogs on the board 12-6.
After a double forfeit at 103 lbs the next match would take place at 112 lbs between Waasmowin Craven and Bradley Hall. Hall would go on to pin Craven with a fall time of 3:57 to bring everything even at 12-12.
119 lbs would be a double forfeit leading into the 125 lb matchup between Matt Chiles and Katelin Yiirs. Chiles would score the fall at 3:24 putting the Hornets back on top 18-12.
The Bulldogs would forfeit the rest of the weight classes with the Hornets picking up victories as follows: 135 Kenny Crawford, 145 Hunter Sonnenberg, 152 Nate Chiles, 160 Zander Overholt and 171 Corbin Overholt
The final meet score was a 58-12 Hornet victory. The Hornet wrestling team will next be in action on Wednesday, February 24 in Newberry against Newberry, Rudyard and Cheboygan.
